A common problem shared by men and women of all ages is unwanted hair. Practices like shaving, plucking, and waxing can become tiresome and, in many cases, uncomfortable. People with darker skin or curly hair may struggle with conditions such as ingrown hairs and razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae). The repeated trauma to hair follicles can lead to hyperpigmentation. When hair growth is reduced using gentle laser energy, these problems can be resolved, and you can rid yourself of the endless need to shave unwanted hair and damage sensitive skin.

Laser Hair Removal With the GentleMax Pro®

Grossmont Dermatology Medical Clinic uses the latest technology to address patients' concerns. This laser hair reduction and skin rejuvenation system has demonstrated outstanding clinical effectiveness time and time again, and has been designed to deliver laser energy in the gentlest, most comfortable manner.

The GentleMax Pro® system incorporates YAG laser and Alexandrite lasers. The dual lasers allow us to customize treatment for all skin types. During treatment sessions, controlled amounts of laser energy are delivered to the target area. Quickly, comfortably, and safely, this energy destroys hair in the follicles, as well as the follicles themselves with minimal effects on the surrounding skin.

Who Is a Candidate for Laser Hair Reduction?

Many skin types can be treated effectively with the right technology.

You may be a candidate for laser hair reduction if you have unwanted hair in one or more of the following areas:

  • Legs
  • Underarms
  • Bikini area
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Neck

What To Expect from Laser Hair Reduction

One of the benefits of laser hair reduction with the GentleMax Pro® is that fewer treatments may be needed to achieve the desired outcome. Every person is different and the number of treatments may vary. Several sessions are scheduled, allowing us to eliminate hair as it grows. Each session targets actively growing hair, not hair that is in the resting phase.

Preparing for Treatment

For about two weeks prior to your laser hair removal appointment, avoid waxing, threading or plucking hair in the treatment area. These techniques remove hair from the root, leaving nothing for the laser to identify and target. Shaving is permitted during that time. You should also avoid spending time in the sun, using tanning beds or applying self-tanning products. Our team will give you a complete list of medications to avoid, such as Accutane and Retin-A, that may raise the risk of an adverse reaction During or after treatment.

On the day prior to your appointment, please shave the area(s) being lasered and refrain from applying cosmetics or creams to the skin.

Treatment Details

During laser hair reduction treatment, the GentleMax Pro® delivers cool pulses along with laser energy. This creates a more comfortable experience. Most people who are treated with this system report feeling only mild warmth or tingling. We discuss ways to ensure comfort after laser hair reduction and how to protect the skin throughout the course of treatment with simple skin care tips.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Hair Reduction

How does laser hair reduction work?

When directed at selective areas of unwanted hair, the laser targets the melanin pigment in the hair follicle and creates a heat response. This damages the hair follicle so it is unable to grow hair again. For the best results, there must be contrast between the color of the hair and the skin so the laser can properly distinguish the hair follicle.

What are the most popular areas for laser hair reduction?

The face and bikini area are very popular among our female patients. The back is popular among male patients.

What is the difference between laser hair reduction and electrolysis?

Laser hair reduction uses laser energy to heat and destroy hair follicles. Electrolysis uses an electronic current to destroy individual hair follicles. Electrolysis is a much slower process than laser hair reduction because each follicle must be treated separately.

What will I feel during laser hair reduction?

It depends on your individual pain tolerance. Some patients describe the sensation as if a small rubber band is snapping across the skin. Others hardly feel anything during treatment.

How many treatment sessions will I need to see results?

The number of treatment sessions needed varies from patient to patient. Our team will recommend a treatment protocol based on your individual hair thickness, the areas you want treated and your hair growth cycle.

On average, GentleMax Pro patients require fewer treatment sessions to see great results.

Is there anything I need to avoid right after laser hair reduction?

Refrain from strenuous exercise or other activities that cause sweating (i.e., hot yoga, using a sauna) for 24 hours after your treatment session. Avoid exfoliating or using abrasive cleansers on the treated area for a few days. Avoid sun exposure for at least one week. If you know you will be outside for prolonged periods of time, apply sunscreen liberally.

How long does laser hair reduction last?

The results last for a long time. We usually recommend maintenance or touch-up treatments once or twice a year.

How much does laser hair reduction cost?

The cost depends on the technology used, area(s) treated and number of sessions required. For an accurate price quote, please schedule a consultation with our team.
