Next Generation Wrinkle Reduction and Lifting Treatment
By the time you are 25, your body's production of collagen and elastin, two proteins responsible for keeping your skin looking young and tight, gradually starts to decline. While loose, wrinkled skin may be an inevitable part of aging, there are some non-invasive cosmetic treatments that can help to rejuvenate your appearance. Grossmont Dermatology Medical Clinic is pleased to offer the latest in skin lifting and wrinkle reducing technology: Sofwave™ SUPERB™.
SUPERB (synchronous ultrasound parallel beam technology) is an FDA-approved treatment for improving lines and wrinkles on the face, tightening loose skin on the neck and around the chin and elevating a drooping eyebrow. The treatment is safe, quick and proven effective in clinical trials.
Using proprietary Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam Technology, SUPERB™, energy precisely passes through the skin's surface (the epidermis), heating the mid-dermal tissue at just the right depth and temperature to rejuvenate collagen fibers and improve the overall appearance of the face.
How Sofwave™ SUPERB™ Works?SUPERB™ uses a proprietary system to administer ultrasound energy that reaches beneath the skin's surface to the the middle layers of the dermis. The temperature is set so that it best stimulates new collagen production, which gradually tightens and smooths lax skin.
Treatments typically about an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area and the number of treatment areas requested. Patients can lie down and relax for the duration of the treatment. They should expect to feel warmth on the skin, though not to the point of pain. Discomfort is managed with help from a topical numbing cream applied to the treatment area ahead of the procedure.
Who is a Good Candidate for Sofwave™ SUPERB™?Sofwave™ is most often recommended for patients over 30 who have mild to moderate signs of aging on their face. These patients should want to reduce lines and wrinkles, tighten sagging submental and neck skin and/or lift the eyebrows without requiring surgery. When it comes to lines, SUPERB™ is better suited for lines caused by frequent muscle movements than folds resulting in facial volume loss.
Unlike some similar treatments, SUPERB™ is safe on all skin types and tones. (Some laser-based treatments can damage darker skin pigmentations). Sofwave's high safety standards make it appropriate for most patients. Patients who are pregnant, have taken certain medications in recent months, or who have an open wound or active acne outbreak may need to wait to undergo this treatment.
What is Sofwave™ Recovery Like? Most patients do not experience downtime following Sofwave™ treatment. Symptoms are typically limited to some temporary redness or swelling. Patients can resume normal activities and their usual skin care routine as soon as they leave Grossmont Dermatology Medical Clinic.
What Results Can I Expect From Sofwave™?Patients notice significant improvement to their skin about one week following treatment, though it can take a few months for the full results to become apparent. Allow time for the boosted collagen production to become visible on the skin.
Most patients only require a single treatment to see results, though some may benefit from a second treatment. Patients often choose to undergo Sofwave™ once per year to maintain the results.
FAQs for Sofwave™ SUPERB™ Treatment
What Face and Body Areas Can Sofwave™ SUPERB™ Treat?Sofwave™ is FDA-cleared to lift sagging eyebrows, improve jowling and jawline definition, tighten the skin under the chin, and tighten neck skin. This technology can also improve acne scars and cellulite by promoting firmer skin with more collagen. The skin tightening treatment is best for people with mild to moderate loose skin under their chin, along their jawline, and around the eyes. Wrinkles on the chest or decolletage may improve with Sofwave™ SUPERB™ treatment.
Is Sofwave™ SUPERB™ Safe? The Sofwave™ SUPERB™ applicator is safe for acne scars, lines and wrinkles, loose skin, cellulite, and drooping brows. The FDA clearance for its use was based on several studies that showed no adverse events and minimal side effects. SUPERB™ has a strong safety profile, and clinical studies reported no severe side effects. The integrated cooling mechanism in the device (Sofcool™) protects the outermost layer of skin from burning and reduces discomfort.
Is Sofwave™ SUPERB™ Treatment Painful? The handheld device emits pulses lasting six or seven seconds that heat the tissues slowly. Patients often report warming sensations throughout the treatment, which may be mildly uncomfortable. A topical anesthetic cream can ease discomfort during Sofwave™ SUPERB™ treatment, but generally, people experience little to no pain with this technology.
How Long Does Sofwave™ Skin Tightening Treatment Take?Treatments with the Sofwave™ device take 30 to 40 minutes on the face and neck and require no downtime.
How Long Do Sofwave™ SUPERB™ Results Last?Skin tightening with Sofwave™ may last one to two years. FDA studies indicate patients may achieve the best and longest-lasting results with a "booster" session one to two months after their initial treatment.
Are There Any Side Effects or Risks Associated with Sofwave™ SUPERB™?Clinical trials with Sofwave™ technology showed no device-related adverse events or serious side effects. The clinical evaluations of SUPERB™ showed patients may experience erythema (redness) that goes away a few hours or days after treatment with the device. Some patients may have edema (swelling) that also dissipates within a few days. Moderate pain during treatment with some discomfort or tenderness afterward may occur. Rarer side effects included skin pigmentation changes, skin ulceration or erosion, and bruising.
Is Sofwave™ SUPERB™ Safe for All Skin Types and Tones? One of the benefits of this advanced technology is the fact that the SUPERB™ device can treat all skin types. That is not often the case with these types of treatments, as many laser treatments are not suitable for darker skin tones. Sofwave™ is safe and effective for all Fitzpatrick skin types, from light to dark skin tones.
Most patients with mild to moderate skin laxity, cellulite, or acne scars will qualify for Sofwave™ SUPERB™ treatment. (The contraindications for SUPERB™ skin treatment include active acne, open wounds, implanted electrical devices, and pregnancy. Some medications may increase risks.)
How Many Treatments Do I Need?Sofwave™ provides visible results with just one treatment; most patients do not need a second session. However, another treatment may boost your initial results and create more collagen in the area. The number of sessions depends on the severity of your skin concerns.
